Lately, I’ve been finding selections of books I thought you might enjoy, and based on how often you’ve been clicking those links, I think it’s been a hit! Are you ready for this month’s book club meeting??

This month, I joined a roundup called “Mayhem & Motives: Mystery, Thriller, & Suspense Reads,” and guys. The titles in this collection are FIRE. I had such a hard time choosing which ones to feature in my collage! There are over 100 books in this selection, and so many of the covers and blurbs gave me chills! Don’t walk–run!

Meanwhile, a previous roundup I joined is still running: “Uneasy and Uncomfortable Reads.” With Halloween just around the corner, this collection of books sounded so seasonally appropriate! Below are the book covers I thought would tempt you the most. So much mystery to choose from, with all different levels of spook!

And if you’re really craving those chilling vibes, this roundup also includes piles of paranormal, horror, dark fantasy, and weird sci-fi. Altogether, there are some 40 titles to browse. What they all have in common is that sense of something going bump in the night…  Be warned! Enter at your own risk…

If you find something in either of these lists that you like, please share this post with your fellow bookworms! These roundups represent dozens of hard-working and very creative authors, for whom every sale makes a huge difference in their ability to keep giving you entertainment you love.

Okay, but what have *I* been reading lately? This one!

Post Captain
by Patrick O’Brian

I enjoyed the first book in this series so much (Master and Commander), I had to snap up the next one. The series is historical Naval adventure, set in the era of the Napoleonic Wars. The thrilling sea battles are underpinned by the delightful friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey and his ship’s surgeon, Dr. Stephen Maturin.

In the early chapters of Post Captain, I was afraid for a hot second that O’ Brian was going all Jane Austin on me. (Not that there’s anything wrong with Jane Austen; I was also reading Pride & Prejudice recently; but I’d returned to O’Brian’s books for the sea battles!) In between Naval appointments, Aubrey and Maturin had taken up a house in the English countryside and become the hot topic amongst all the marriageable young ladies–thus raising my suspicions that O’Brian was trying his hand at some Regency romance.

But about the time Captain Aubrey had his head turned by a lady in the middle of a fox hunt, fell from his poorly-ridden horse, and got dragged across the English countryside–those fears were laid to rest. The long suffering horse had a hilarious inner monologue and everything, and was absolutely plotting Aubrey’s unfortunate demise.

So, if you want sea adventures, deep characterization, and Jane Austen turned comedic, maybe give Patrick O’Brian’s series a try!

In today’s book selections, I hope you find something to suit your fancy. I look forward to bringing you more in the future!
