Coming … eventually
Megan Bolanski always knew her life was boring beyond words. So, it’s pretty strange being, like, seventeen, and finding out you have a grandfather you figured was long dead. And it gets even weirder when you find out your dad was once an accomplished equestrian. Scratch that. An Olympic show jumper. And when your new grandpa insists the ten years he spent in prison was a mistake, and he’s on a mission to find out who set him up, and the FBI gets involved … it could be the end of boring.
Excerpt from the Novel
Megan’s eyes sprang open. It was still dark. She heard the rustle and swish of somebody slipping on a jacket. Pulling up the zipper. She turned her head toward the hall just in time to see her grandfather open the front door and step out.
Leaning over the side of the hide-a-bed, she grabbed her wrist watch from the end table and squinted at the face. Six o-five.
She flopped back down on the pillow and moaned. Who in their right mind would get up at six? Where was he going in the middle of the night, anyway?
Suddenly dying to know, she kicked off her blanket. Leaning against the back of the sofa, she pulled the curtain aside and peered out.
Whoa–check it out! Sunrise? Already? Who’da thunk? This was quite possibly the first time she’d ever seen it for real.
Her grandfather was headed for the stable. He didn’t walk like a grandfather. His stride was too long. His back was too straight.
Megan lowered her chin to her hand and stared after him. Who was this guy? She had a weird craving. Like chocolate. No, worse than that. She wanted to figure out who he was. Figure out why he’d never been a part of her life. Figure out why on earth the three-year-old Megan in the photograph had been smiling so idiotically while sitting on his lap. Whoever took the photograph must have tricked her into smiling. It couldn’t have been because she liked him.
- Cool fact: Megan’s grandfather served time for supposedly being involved in the horse murder scandals of the ’80’s and ’90’s. It was a big deal in the show jumping world–and yes, the FBI was involved.
